Parakeets

Maroon-chested Conure

Lineolated ParakeetWe currently keep 3 types of parakeet and have kept others in the past. We have included the cockatiel in this list although it is not a true parakeet. They add yet another dimension to our community, bringing their own unique behaviours and characters.

Whilst they are attractive and easy to keep, they are not without their drawbacks. Several species are very destructive of the vegetation. Others impact less badly. We have tried varying the diet of the parakeets in the hope of finding a dietary substitute but whatever we try, the destruction continues. There are plenty species of shrub that they will not touch but we resent being constrainded in our choice. In particular, we would to grow Honeysuckle or Clematis to provide both colour, shelter and perching opportunities but all of these climbers seem to be a particular favourite. The worst offenders have been cockateils and conures. Lineolated parakeets will chew off buds and fresh growth but not to the point where the plant cannot continue to flourish. The elegants and turquoisines have very little impact.

They also add new voices to the environment; squawking, chattering and calling to passers by. They also cope well in a community and don't negatively impact upon other species.
