White-headed Nun - Description

White NunsThe white-headed nun is an easy bird to keep. We currently have 4 of them and, like many finches, they tend to remain in a group. The current population is a mixture of new and old, a previous pair having raised a clutch of chicks.

Ours nested in a covered wicker basket in a secluded spot. They packed the basket tight with coconut fibre and hay before laying their eggs. They successfully raised their chicks bar 1 which never matured and prefered tohop rather than fly.

They feed on finch mix, usually feeding from the pots. They roost mainly in the open branches, showing little interest in the shrubs. They are hardy and we have kept them over several winters now.

They are good community birds, proving capable of breeding in the mixed aviary whilst being non-intrusive towards other species.
