Spice Finch - Description

Firstly, a word on nomenclature. Spice finch seems to be more of an avicultural term for this finch, known as a Scaly-brested Munia in ornithology. It also has other aliases which I have listed below.

We have usually had at least one pair in our aviary at any one time and currently have a group of 5. They are hardy and easily catered for although we have not yet seen any signs of nest-building from them. The Finch Handbook suggests that they need shrubs to build their own nests in which we have aplenty in our aviary. However, ours have so far resisted the urge.

The are excellent community birds roosting together on small branches. They often feed of the ground but are comfortable with the pots also. They are not possible to sex which is one reason that we have gone for a group rather than a pair.
