Peruvian Ground Dove - Description
The Peruvian
ground dove
is quieter than the Diamond dove but they are easy to sex, as can be
seen in the two photos of the cock and hen birds. They are similar in
size and tend to avoid the finches, keeping themselves to themself. Ours
have not nested or mated - we are not sure why given the prolific nature
of the Diamonds.
Whilst attractive on the branch they are very ungainly in the
air. Add to this their nervousness and they are often responsible for disturbing
the community, prematurely taking flight and then crashing into other, settled
birds.
They eat small seeds (millet etc) almost exclusively and prefer
to feed on the ground in the mornings and late afternoons.
They have been hardy and seem to cope well with the climate
year-round.
